Unit 3
FINAL MAJOR PROJECT
Project Proposal
Project Proposal to include mind maps, drafts and any notes etc

What is my project ? broken down it is essentially looking at the commercialisation of football clubs and fans on the wider scale its looking at the effects owners have on the local area , the effect it has on the fans and what it spells for the future. The issue has been more and more prominent more so since the covid period and with this we saw lots of people lose their livelihoods and in a time of little joy even after covid many clubs within the English first division kept their season tickets and tickets themselves at eyewatering fees , its about exploring how clubs view fans as nothing more then cash cows and with this we see a natural unrest within many fanbases i.e Tottenham , manchester united etc etc... for me its about looking at the motives of these protesters , looking at how no matter how much money you give to a club glory is not guranteed if the owners dont share the same views " the game is about glory " however for owners the game is about greed , maximising an investment until its reached its peak , that is what my project is about.

Planning
Calendar, Pitch, pitch evaluation and any communication with others - make sure you explain and analyses elements

For my piece i plan on using a newspaper / magazine , where I will use photos taken by myself , writing under different subtopics under the umbrella topic of ' have football fans been priced out of supporting their teams ' I plan on going to matchday protests and am hopeful to interview protest organisers
Problem Solving
Pitch evaluation
overall this was probably my best pitch yet , i thought it was well delivered , clear and most of all what i was going to do was understood.
The introduction was punchy , had a clear title and i outlined my ideas , processes , content and style of the project. There was little to no confusion with what my project was going to look like or what it was about , I unfortunately did not cover a target audience however I know personally that their is a lot of discontent with many fans surrounding the topic. This pitch my aim was to use more visuals as its a topic im passionate about I didnt need many written ques , I used a varied amount of images w/ no videos nor audio. I showed all of my research methods which included a poll on classrooms as well as research via CFT ( change for Tottenham ) and Save Our Seniors. My pitch was clear , enthusiastic and easy to follow.

Who are change for Tottenham?

Change For Tottenham is a fan led group built around the foundations of making Tottenham into a winning team , but they werent just made for that , increasing fan engagement , investing properly in the local area , implementing fair ticket costs are just a few of the groups beliefs.
Change For Tottenham are a group for all , aimed at restoring the glory back in Tottenham , they played a crucial part within my project and provided an excellent interview and provided excellent information.
Drafts , production and communication

Ticket for the Tottenham v southampton game

messages between me and my step dad regarding scarfs and images from the game
me and linzi looked over my draft and edits were made , mainly grammar and spacings however they were needed changes and as a result my FMP looks much cleaner and flows better aswell , also there were several layout changes , with us moving the type face and aswell shifted around some sentences so that the page flowed properly.

communication between myself and fan led group Change For Tottenham this includes email chains regarding interview questions alongside X messages asking if they can be interviewed.
Equipment and software list
Camera - i used a camera as opposed to my phone due to an increase in quality and being able to be more comfortable using the cameras and going out with the cameras

Photoshop - some of my images taken needed tweeking in photoshop , this was needed to make necessary changes i.e lighting and cropping images

whilst not completley obvious the lighting means that you can see slightly more emotion on his face and as he his at the front its what the viewer will immediately look at.
Research
Research Existing productions & Background research about the topic and psychology behind it include:
Primary, secondary, quantitive & qualitative.
Make sure you explain and analyses elements
Photography:
Depth of field - how much of the scene is in focus , distance between closest and furthest image that is clear and sharp. How can it be achieved? Aperture , focal length , camera distance to subject
Rule of thirds - is an off-centre composition where important elements of a photograph are placed along a 3x3 grid , which equally divides the image into 9 parts , it gives basic structure and appeals to the audience

How has this helped?
Research into depth of fields and rule of thirds helped me not only to understand what they are but the composition required to make a good photograph , I also feel that this had a big impact on the photos i took and ultimately the photos i picked as making sure i had a consistent and good composition was very crucial to myself in having confidence in my end production
Photograph mood board

Why this image?
I really like how you almost feel apart of the atmosphere you can really feel and see the emotion especially with the person at the front , as well as that i also really like the composition , this is the sort of photo i am to achieve

Why this image?
I really like the layering in this one with the banners and signage all forming rows behind one another it adds a lot of depth to the photo , this ones abit farther away giving the feeling of being less involved which is not necessarily my ideal photo however the layering is a huge aim of mine.

Why this image?
My reasoning behind choosing this photo was its a much more intimate photo and really portrays the feeling of it actually being street photography , the young boy mixed with the mural gives quite a somber feeling , and the emotion and gravity of whats going on is really portrayed by the young boys face , this is an aim of mine to be able to portray emotion via the people in my photos and was a big part part why i chose this image.
Primary research

Why did i choose the topic?
My reasoning for picking the two topics was to gain more of an understanding within a small sample group of whether or not people believe football ticket costs are A) too expensive and B) how much do you believe they should be.
What did I gain
Whilst only gathering data from a small sample size what i was able to gain was very minimal but regardless helped inform me on topics to research , questions to ask and giving me perhaps a different point of view from what i would perhaps normally have
Links and sources

looking at the richest clubs in the world , helped to not only inform me but develop more of understanding on Tottenhams financial situation

Tottenhams list of departures too gain an understanding on netspend and profit made from departures to gain an understanding on an outlay of the clubs finances

an explosive post match interview with former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte , parts of which were used during my piece this was important as its the first time a manager at Totteham whilst still employed has directly criticised the ownership

Looking at cheapest adult season tickets in the premier league , this was a very important subject to research as it was a key topic and talking point of my piece

again this was a big talking point within my piece and necessary research was needed and as i was able to use a quote made it even better
What did i gain from my research
My research not only informed me on information not known prior to my project but aswell helped shape my production , with the layout , writing style , and photographs. Aswell it helped my production to be alot more informative and make the piece on the whole look more well rounded
Practical Skills
Practical research: experiments with technical elements ie - filming, audio, studio setups, using software premier, Indesign.

Photography workshop

Me , charlie and joseph used varied distances pulling things and people in and out of focus or using other objects to pull attention to something we wanted the viewer to look at

Photography
This time was more of a focus on crowd work , understanding the cameras more and how to use them i.e iso etc... overall i found it a very good few hours as i was not only able to hone my camera skills but understand what makes a good shot i.e rule of thirds.

THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN DELETED
Problem Solving
me and Joseph both had issues with our cameras however it was easily resolved after a quick play around , it was to do with the iso so now i know how to adjust the iso in different lighting.

The reason as to why i decided this guys face needed lighting was so that it looked more natural and as he is one of the first people you see in the photo i feel he needed to be more visible my hope was he would have a bit of emotion on his face and while thats not necessarily the case it makes it look better and isn't unnatural as to warrant any unwanted attention
This photo needed cropping as a few outside the main shot arent really prepared and henceforth take away attention , i feel highlighting the two other banners really encapsulate the emotion and draw in the viewer more especially as the main component of my piece is the photos.
Why didnt i choose these photos

The reason why i didnt use this image was due to the people on the right i feel it takes away from the actual good part of the image aswell as that i feel like there isnt much emotion captured as opposed to other photos , whilst it is a different sort of view to the others i felt others were better and opted against using it

Again whilst the photo and composition is decent i feel a lack of emotion and my aim to really be able to feel the emotion and importance of the event however i feel like once ive developed my camera skills to a good level it wont be an issue i also felt compared to other photos this was lacking
This was a decent photo however i felt the composition was lacking and there was too much space at the top combined with the people on the right hand side i felt your attention was drawn slighlty more there then to the main event
Why i chose those photos

I chose this photo as i really like the focus on the guy in front mixed with the slight blur of the banners and scarfs in the background i also feel it captures the raw emotion and significance of the circumstances , i also feel he encapsulates the stereotypcial football holigan and think itll really bring the piece to life

The reason why i chose this was due to the fact its younger fans involved and showing that all ages care , aswell as this the young lad in the middle is shouting and or chanting and again i feel like it really captures the raw emotion of the situation and aswell as that i like that you can see the yellow of the enic out scarves behind him

My reason for choosing this photo is that its got a completely different compostion and with the high rises and " coys " billboard makes it feel like theres not any space wasted i also feel the coys and the protests perfectly compliment one another , almost showing despite the protests the fans still back and support the team
Comparison

The photo on the left was one of my first proper images and its fairly obvious , with camera being overexposed , people blurred and a poor composition meanwhile the one on the right despite not using had a good composition ion , the us of leading lines and clearly captures the emotion of the situation meanwhile the one on the left does not , even though i didnt use the photo on the right it is still a very good and well laid out image and shows the increase in the level of my photography over such a short time.
inspiration
Tottenhams lack of success has often been a laughing stock among broadcasters , and are often spoken of being spursy its very rare that sky or TNT will look at root issues such as the ownership however with the in stadium protests theyve had litte choice but to debate it , former spurs man Jermain Defoe and former liverpool man Jamie Caragher alongside Man UTD legend Gary Neville debate the clubs ownership and what needs to change , a very interesting watch that helped inform my articles and how i wanted to portray my piece
This video includes an explosive rant post match from former tottenham boss Antonio Conte of which he heavily critiqued the ownership and the players , this at the time was a real eye opener as he was the first manager ive seen to criticise the ownership whilst still being manager
Reflect & Develop
Feedback & smart targets
Evaluation
Project concept
My concept proposal was the same sort of idea throughout with using a magazine layout spliced with elements of a newspaper article , the idea was originally to mainly have it as print but in order to be more efficient and create somewhat of a portfolio for myself i've decided to publish it and post it online to X ( formerly twitter ) this is in order to gain any positive and negative feedback from people who are passionate about my subject as well as starting potential dialogues around my topic , originally i set out to do an in person interview with a group called Change For Tottenham as well as members of the public , my concept slightly changed with it mainly being an opinion piece however i did manage to get in contact with Change For Tottenham via email and get a few statements from themselves whilst i did state i would be developing a keener understanding of the state of English football i changed that slightly to be more centralised around Tottenham as from an fan point of view it is easy for me to formulate articles that have substance and depth to them. I state i would like to develop more skills and i feel i have done that and i now feel very passionate and proud around the development of my photography
Research and experiment findings
Whilst my secondary research boasted useful I found that my primary research was lacking however was useful at the start of my project and when pitching my project as to gain an understanding of whether or not a small sample group agreed with my thoughts , in future i will carry out more diligent and thorough primary research as to not only help myself but see if my views are shared , I definitely feel now when looking back i should have done polls on X and instagram in the run up toward my final piece , my experiments not only helped me develop skills but as previously mentioned help me to have a keener outlook on my projects and now photography I feel proud of my work which is something ive yet to have been able to say on this course however can confidently say now.
Target and market audience
My audience is mainly a maturer audience as it is primarily out on X , whilst stereotypically people may think that the main audience is white males , my audience is anyone who is passionate around football and is a piece aimed at highlighting issues around Tottenham , as its wrote in a more formal style I feel that the main age demographic will be between 25 - 40. I should of done more research into my target audience and market audience and is something which will definitely be included for next year.
Production and planning
My planning was diligent and well thought through with consistent idea development shown throughout and contrasts between what i wanted my project to look like and what i didnt , i drew upon magazines and articles to help build a format and develop how i wanted my articles to be wrote , from the get go i knew i wanted to do my piece around football and protests and had that penciled in as a key date and have also planned around a specific group Change For Tottenham and actualised what i set out to do.
I thought my production was a big success , with no major issues i found that the photography holds a bigger allure to the actual piece then the writing as its what the viewer sees first i found it a resounding success , whilst i had included laws and ethics they were not really needed as i did no in person interviews nor was any form of laws or ethics breached. As previously mentioned i could not be happy with my final production whilst i understand the main bulk of the FMP is the work done in between the fact my project turned out so well in my opinion overshadows that and i couldnt be happier , Linzi as well said my photography was excellent however said its the parts in between that needs improving and i do agree.
Production outcomes
Looking at my articles broken down they are essentially newspaper columns and draw on newspaper columns as an inspiration for not only the style but how they are wrote my goal? keeping it formal whilst also trying to keep it so that most people can understand the bulk and the main talking points of my writing.
My photography was aimed at encapsulating emotion , bringing the drama and magnitude of whats going on all together in a few photos , this was to help the viewer understand what it means to a select group of people and why its so important.
Summary and conclusion
I feel in summary the outcome of the project is beside the point i feel i have developed not only as a journalist but as a person i feel the project has helped me grow , be passionate and more importantly proud of my work whilst yes this is due to my project going successful looking at my prior work and evaluations i havent been able to put an onus on being proud of my work and now that i feel happy with my work i see how important it is to be proud of work ive done and for that im greatful to be on this course and develop my skills and myself , i just hope that the work done in between is good enough to recognise my final production whilst yes there are parts that definelty arent as good as others im committed to putting it right and am more then willing should i be given free reign to do what i feels best for future productions.
